Channel 5 was launched in 1963 as Television Singapura and was the first free-to-air television station in Singapore that broadcasts in English while it also aired Malay programmes at the time. Channel 5 began transmitting in colour on 7 July 1974 with the live telecast of the 1974 FIFA World Cup Final. On August 1, 1990, Channel 5, started broadcasting in stereo and, Malay programmes were transferred to Channel 12 on 1st January 1994 and to Suria in 2000. Channel 5 started broadcasting for 24 hours per day on 29 September 1995.
