Variety - Vasantham Star 

Vasantham star also adds on the idea of democracy. The idea of enabling the audience to have say in the competition is seen to be applying the idea of democracy. As such, the votes of the majority becomes essential in determining the winner of Vasantham Star. By allowing the members of the public to decide on the winner via majority vote, similar to that of Singapore Idol. Vasantham Star is seen to be connecting with tamil speaking community through the singing of tamil songs. In Singapore, Tamil is the majority language spoken by the Tamil Indians in Singapore. By tapping on such a program, it allows the Indian community be connected and bonded through a common interest that is the singing of Kollywood songs. This further builds on the community spirit and hence providing a platform for a more united Indian community in Singapore.

Vasantham Star program was inaugurated in 2005. The talent search was held and hosted by MediaCorp Vasantham TV channel. There had been a total of four seasons of Vasantham Star since 2005. The winner of the first season was Shabir. His departure resulted in the local community writing a petition that was signed by more than 500 members of the public. This was taken into consideration by the producers for the first time in the Tamil television industry. Thus, they introduced a wild card entry which paved the way for Shabir’s re-entry into the competition.

 

The subsequent winners were Ebi Shankara, Vicknesh and Suthasini. This talent search included the votes of the audience that was essential in the judging criteria. Along with the panel of judges, the SMS voting of the audiences would be counted.

 

 

Vasantham Star was not only considered a competition, it was also a platform that saw the rise of young local talents. Stars like Devarajan, Udaya Soundari, Vignesh Wardarajan made their first appearance in Vasantham through this show.s Hence, this hsow became a platform for the contestants to display their talents. As such, variety shows like Vsantham Star allowed the Singaporean Indians to showcase their talents in this media.
