The Singapore Identity
~ Journey to Finding our Roots ~
A closer look at...
Sitcom - Amali Thumali
1997 Amali Thumali (Hustle And Bustle), Singapore's first Tamil sitcom, made its debut on Prime 12.
This cemented Singapore’s role as a pioneer in television production in a regional context, as well as creating content for the multitude of cultures that make up our country. Interestingly it was also the first tamil Sitcom in the world, placing Singapore on the map of the Tamil film industry. Furthermore, it engages the use of dance numbers to attract viewership as well.
The MP, Ms Indranee Raja, had highlighted that Vasantham was moving towards high quality and innovative programmes which included dramas in 2009. (towards the third stage of our period) As such, (the transition to an independent channel) we can see that after the launch of an independent channel from Vasantham Central to Vasantham had opened up/paved the way for more opportunities that had enabled Vasantham to direct dramas that reflected different genres and stories. Hence, the innovative and creative ideas of Vasantham in relation to dramas are in good shape but should persist and be a continuous process. This could be one of the possible ways in which it had faced the ongoing pressures and challenges posed by the cable televisions.
